5 tips to start your Yoga practice
Whether you have been practicing for a while or are absolutely brand new, these 5 tips may support you on your yoga journey!
Tip #1 - JUST START
This seems contradictive if you're are struggling to start a yoga practice, but showing up is the hardest part and once you show up the rest will start to unfold! So, start by simply opening your mat and showing up. It can be scary to start something knew, to step into the unkown, but think about how many times in your life you've had to do that. I could guess more than once! Be compassionate with yourself and just start. It doesn't have to be perfect, it won't be perfect...ever!! But that is why yoga is a practice.
Tip #2 - START SMALL
Doing the most, does not mean you are doing the best! Start small! Maybe you open your mat and do a childs pose. Maybe you take a class and don't do all the postures or breath techniques. There is no right or wrong way to practice, there is just what you need to do for YOU every time you meet your mat. Beginner classes are a great way to build your foundation of the practice, so that you can learn common poses, breath techniques, and start learning about all that yoga can offer. Be compassionate with yourself and trust that you are doing enough and that you will evolve with time and practice.
Tip #3 - MAKE IT CONSISTENT
When we show up over and over again we reroute our body and mind with a new habitual practice. The more you meet your mat, the more likely you are to meet your mat again and again and again! Like everything, yoga is a flow. Sometimes we may want to practice and other days we may not. It's okay if you aren't practicing asana (physical poses) everyday, but maybe you pull in moments of pause, meditation, or stillness into your day..that is still yoga! You could practice with a friend. Yoga buddies can make going to classes exciting and something to look forward to.
Tip #4 - EXPLORE DIFFERENT STYLES
There are worlds of yoga styles out there to explore, so try out all that you can! You may really resonate with one style more than another. The more you know, the more you know! Meaning that the more styles, teachers, and practices you explore the closer you will get to discovering what works for you and where you are at today. Maybe one day you need one style, while another day you may need something totally different. Take time to explore what is right for you.
Tip #5 - INVITE YOGA INTO THE FRAMEWORK OF YOUR LIFE
We all are embarking on our own unique journeys on this Earth and what works for you neighbor might not work for you. Allow your practice to be unique to you and your needs. Yoga can meet you at wherever you're at, however you are, in your life. Don't force, allow! Maybe your yoga meets you in the mornings for a 15 minute flow, maybe midday for a 10 minute mediation, or maybe at night in the hot studio! Explore, discover, and feel what works best for you and your life. Yoga is here for you when you need it.
